As a youth social worker, you know better than anyone that a strong social network is crucial for both parents and children. When parents feel supported by their network, they feel more confident and less alone. This makes them more resilient in raising their children and better able to cope with stress and setbacks.
For children, a support network provides security and stability. Children who know they can rely on their parents, family, friends, and other trusted adults develop greater self-confidence and social skills. They feel less alone and are better able to cope with challenges.
Still, you often run into a few persistent challenges, such as:
1. Limited visibility into the network
Many of the families you work with have little or no awareness of their own social network and perceive it as small or weak. As a social worker, you’re there to provide support, but you can’t do it alone. The family’s social network can be an enormous source of support—if it’s been properly mapped out and actively involved. Sometimes that’s true, and there are hardly any family members or friends who can offer support, but because the family hasn’t mapped out their network themselves, you don’t really know.
2. Complex family dynamics
Divorce, financial problems, addiction, or domestic violence have a major impact on the family. And yet, within the existing network, there are often hidden sources of support that can help provide assistance or lead to new sources of support. Again, you can only discover these if the parents and children themselves map out their social network.
3. Parents as Gatekeepers
A child’s social network is almost always built through their parents. After all, as a child, your parents are your first social connections, and you don’t build your own social network until later. If parents have a hard time asking for or accepting help, that can make it difficult to activate that network.
4. Time constraints and limited resources
You probably work under a lot of pressure, with heavy caseloads and limited time. Because of this, it’s not feasible for you to actively work on strengthening the family’s support network.
So how can you get started with the social network while immediately putting the parent and child in control? The MLM-tool is a wonderful, practical tool that helps you and your families gain a better understanding of the social network.
How does the " MLM-tool " support you as a youth social worker?
The " MLM-tool " offers tangible benefits in your work as a youth social worker:
- A Clear Understanding of the Social Network
Together with the parents and the child, you map out the social network. Who are the most important people in the lives of the child and the parents? You immediately get a clear picture of the family’s social network. This makes it easier to provide the right support and to actively involve the network in the support process.Tryit yourself! -
Strengthening Self-Direction
By mapping out their own network and discovering where they can find support, parents and children feel stronger and more in control of their situation. The “ MLM-tool ” makes it clear when certain forms of support are lacking. Is there someone who offers emotional support, someone who provides practical help, or someone who gives advice? Are there few people they can confide in? Is practical help, such as transportation or childcare, lacking? -
Better Collaboration
This tool provides insight into where collaboration is possible—with family members, friends, teachers, and other important people in the family’s life. Together, you can explore ways to expand or strengthen the support network. This might include reconnecting with family members, enlisting a mentor, or involving the school and neighborhood initiatives. -
Sustainable Support
When the family’s support network is actively involved, support remains available even after social services have ended. The goal is for the family to decide for themselves what steps they can take, to build a strong social network, and to ensure they can rely on that network in the long term. This increases the likelihood of lasting positive change. Read more about how this works in ourblogs.
