Belonging - TGL
June 17, 2026Belonging affects us in a special way
We aren't meant to be lonely.
Belonging isn’t a luxury. It’s a basic human need—whether it’s with a family, a group of friends, a neighborhood, or a team. The form matters less than the feeling: I belong here. I’m welcome here. I’m seen.
When you have that feeling, you often carry it without even realizing it. When it wavers, you feel it right away—in your head, in your body, and in how you experience the day. A comment hits you harder. You withdraw. You say less than you’d actually like to.
Not belonging affects us deeply. That may sound like a big deal, but it’s true. Rejection, being excluded, or feeling unseen—these things undermine our sense of security. Not as a minor inconvenience, but as a warning: be careful.
The Good Life, based on the long-running Harvard Study of Adult Development, also shows how important relationships are to our well-being. It turns out that neither money nor success is the strongest predictor of a good life, but rather the quality of our relationships. Connection isn’t just a nice-to-have. Connection is what sustains us.
And yet, belonging is perhaps the most elusive thing there is. There are no set rules for it. No yardstick. You can be standing right in the middle of a group and still feel alone. You can be surrounded by people and still feel unseen. Connection is personal, vulnerable, and sometimes painfully fragile.
That’s exactly where the risk lies. When we feel rejected or unsafe, we often withdraw. It’s understandable. It’s human. But it’s also risky. Because isolation feeds on itself. The less contact we have, the harder it becomes to connect.
That’s why the question isn’t just: “Who do I belong with?”
But also: “Where do I truly feel connected? Where can I be myself? Where can I find support, safety, and space?”
That’s what the “ MLM-Tool ” reveals. Not just who’s listed on paper as part of someone’s network, but where genuine connection is felt. Where there is safety. Where there is support. And where a sense of loss may have gone unspoken for too long.
Because belonging doesn't start with having more people around you.
It starts with taking a more honest look at where genuine connection lies.
