Being Heard and Listening Yourself

My life with...who? social media Jan. 4, 2025

Being heard and listening to others. We all know that feeling of just wanting to get something off our chest. Whether it’s something small or something big, it feels good when there’s someone who really listens to us. But did you know that listening—both being heard and listening to others—has a much greater impact on our mental health and relationships than we might think?

In this blog post, I explain why listening is so important, how it makes us feel when someone listens to us, and how actively listening to others can enrich our lives.

"The most fundamental human need is the need to understand and be understood. The best way to understand people is to listen to them."
Ralph G. Nichols (author)

Being heard: the feeling that someone is really listening to you

Imagine this: you’ve had a tough day and you’re talking about it with a friend. He looks at you, nods occasionally, asks questions, and listens without interrupting you. That feels good, doesn’t it? That’s because being heard is a deeply human desire. It gives us a sense of acknowledgment, understanding, and connection.

Why Is It So Important to Be Heard?

  1. You feel acknowledged and understood
When someone really listens, it makes youfeel like you matter. This helps you build your self-confidence and better understand your emotions.
  2. It builds trust
When someone takes the time to listen, you feel safer and more at ease in that relationship. That person could be a friend, a family member, or a coworker.
  3. Reducing Stress and Anxiety
Being heard helps regulate emotions. You can get things off your chest, which makes you feel less stressed or anxious. Research has even shown that this lowers your cortisol levels (the stress hormone)!
  4. Feeling Less Lonely
In a world where we’re often in a hurry, you may sometimes feel like no one is really listening. When someone does take the time, it strengthens your sense of connection and reduces feelings of loneliness
  5. Health Benefits of Being Heard
In addition to the mental benefits, being heardalso has physical benefits. It can help lower your blood pressure, slow your heart rate, and even strengthen your immune system. This is because emotional support helps you cope better with stress

Listening for Yourself: Why It's Important to Pay Attention to Others

On the other hand, it’s also important that you listen carefully to others. Active listening means giving your full attention to what someone else is saying. You listen without judging and show that you’re engaged. This has many benefits, both for the other person and for you.

What does listening to others do?

  1. You build better relationships. When people feel that you're really listening to them, trust and respect grow. Good communication is the foundation of strong relationships, whether at home, at work, or among friends.
  2. You develop empathy. By listening to others’ feelings and perspectives, you understand them better. This helps you be more empathetic and feel more connected to the people around you.
  3. You learn and grow on your own. Active listening opens your mind to new insights and ideas. It gives you the chance to think from a different perspective, which helps you think critically and solve problems in new ways.
  4. Reducing Conflicts Many arguments and misunderstandings arise because people don't listen to each other carefully. By listening attentively, you can prevent many of these misunderstandings and find better solutions.
  5. Health Benefits of Listening
Did you know that listening to others is also good for your own health? When you listen actively, you can lower your own stress levels and reduce feelings of frustration. The sense that you’re helping someone else can also have a positive effect on your mood and well-being.

Tips for Better Listening

Do you want to become a better listener? Here are a few simple tips:

  1. Be present:
Give it your full attention and put your phone away for a moment.
  2. Show interest:
Nod or ask a question every now and then to show that you're listening.
  3. Don't judge too quickly:
Really try to understand what the other person means before forming an opinion.
  4. Give them space:
Allow for silences and give the other person space to tell their story.
