How an Accident Changed My Perspective on Networking

My life with...who? mlm-tool social well-being Oct. 13, 2025

A social network may seem to grow on its own, but in reality, it requires attention and maintenance. Often, we don’t realize how important our relationships are until something drastic happens. I discovered this myself after an accident when I was 22, when my network suddenly fell silent and only a small core of supporters remained. That experience changed my perspective on networking forever. In this blog, I’ll show you why understanding your network is essential, how support and connection boost your resilience, and how the “ MLM-tool ” helps you make your network visible and maintain it sustainably.

Your social network is alive. It’s constantly changing, just like you and your life. People come and go; relationships deepen or fade. Often, you don’t really think about it until something significant happens.

My Turning Point

Until I was 22, I was a social person: I made friends easily, found people interesting, and enjoyed my wide network of friends. That is, until a serious skiing accident turned my life upside down. My energy vanished, I had to quit my job, and my social life came to a near standstill.

 What I discovered:

  1. Many people quietly drifted away when I was no longer able to take the initiative myself.
  2. A small, loyal group remained who stood by my side.
  3. I had to rediscover for myself what and who were truly important to me.

That search lasted seven years. Eventually, I decided to devote my energy only to the people who actively reached out to me. That brought me peace, clarity, and reciprocity—a tremendous source of fulfillment.

Networking as a Prerequisite for Life

Now, nearly forty years later, my network looks different once again. Some of these relationships have lasted fifty years, while others are very recent. What remains is this: my network evolves along with my life. It is the foundation on which I can build.

That’s why I know this: insight and maintenance aren’t luxuries, but essentials for life. Networks aren’t static lists, but living systems. They require maintenance—sometimes pruning, sometimes replanting, and sometimes simply enjoying what’s in bloom.

Why this is important for you, too

Everyone benefits from taking the time to consciously reflect on their network.

  • Who are the people who support you, with whom you can laugh or cry?
  • Which relationships drain your energy the most?
  • Where is there room for growth or further development?

By asking those questions, you'll discover who you truly want to cherish—and how you can strengthen your network.

How the " MLM-tool " Helps

That’s exactly where the “ MLM-tool ” comes in. The tool shows you who’s close to you, where support lies, and which relationships need attention. Backed by theories such as Dunbar’s number, you’ll see why a small circle of supporters is often more important than you think.

A lasting understanding of and ongoing maintenance of your network will make you stronger, more resilient, and wealthier. So, take the time to reflect on your network. As far as we’re concerned, it’s your most important asset.
