Social Support During the First 1,000 Days
July 15, 2025The first 1,000 days—from conception to a child’s second birthday—have a major impact on a child’s development. During this period, the foundation for health, attachment, and resilience is laid. But this is also an intense and sometimes vulnerable phase for parents. Many (expectant) parents feel as though they are on their own. Â
According to the SCP, more than 10% of parents experience concerns in three or more areas of life. Parents who face multiple concerns generally have fewer resources. This lack of social support is one of the biggest risk factors. It increases the risk of stress and mental health issues.
Why Social Support Matters
Research shows that strong social support during pregnancy and after childbirth helps reduce stress and feelings of sadness. A social network provides daily support that helps parents cope with stress and uncertainty. Whether it’s practical help, a listening ear, or just someone who’s there—these forms of support make a big difference.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, it turned out that mothers who stayed in touch with people in their immediate circle experienced fewer symptoms after giving birth. This also had a positive effect on their child.
Support is provided not only for child-rearing, but also for other life events such as financial concerns, work-related issues, or changes in relationships. Understanding one’s social network can help reduce stress, enabling parents to continue caring for their children—and themselves—more effectively.
" MLM-tool: A Practical Guide to the Network"
" MLM-tool " (My Life With...?) explores the social network. In five simple steps, (expectant) parents gain insight into and an overview of their network: who is close to them, who energizes them, and where is there room for new connections or renewed relationships?
This tool has been successfully used in the European PATH project (2019–2023) and is now being implemented on a broader scale in the municipalities of Kent and Medway in England.
What You Can Do as a Professional:
The “ MLM-tool ” was specifically developed to help (expectant) parents map out their own social network. It provides your client with insight and gives you an overview, allowing you to have a meaningful conversation about their network. Professionals in perinatal care, child health care, or the social services sector can easily use this tool. It helps parents take control of their own situation and gives you, as a professional, a way to identify risks early on.
The benefits at a glance:

- Discussions about social support become concrete and visual
- The tool complements existing prevention programs
- Risks of stress or mental health issues are becoming more apparent
